My Favorite Thing Is Monsters by Emil Ferris

For a while I was trading graphic novel recommendations / challenges with my Twitter pal Ron Sweeney, and My Favourite Thing Is Monsters is the latest up to the plate.

The scene: one awkward, lonely kid who loves pulp fiction and wants more than anything to be a werewolf; one suspicious death in her ancient, creepy apartment building; one incredibly patient and mysterious older brother (How is he so cool? What kind of trouble is in?); too many family secrets to count; and finally, 385 pages of beautiful ballpoint pen illustration. It’s breathtaking and flabbergasting.

This is another one of those graphic novels where I thought it was a standalone, one-and-done situation, and it turned out to be the beginning of a series. Bummer, because now I have to wait for the next volume to be released, and that’s not until next April.
